Tehran, Iran, August 4, 2015 – Korea caused a major sensation on Tuesday when they came back to beat hosts and reigning successive two-time champions Iran 3-1 17-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-23 to top Pool E and next will face Japan in the quarter-finals of the 18th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship.
Korea’s coach, Yonhkwan Moon: “Iran is good at services but we were successful controlling them. Iran is very strong and we are pleased that we were able to beat this team no matter what team they fielded in the championship. The point of victory in this match was a strong spirit of cooperation and coordination among my players.
Korea’s captain, Youngmin Kwon: “We were playing against the top team of Asia. They were great at serves but we were better in defence and managed to control them. I hope to go on with the same pace with the other teams in our next matches.
Coach of Iran, Peyman Akbari: “I can’t say I am happy with this loss, but it was good. It is good that at this stage we learned that we must fight to the last moment. Congratulations to the Korean team and the coach. We lost the second, third and fourth sets due to the individual errors of our players. My players were good at targeted serves but the Korean players were receiving these serves just well. We were 2 or 3 percent down in attacking than Korea. We made little mistakes but the number of individual errors doubled. Even outside the ground at some points, we were making wrong decisions. My players do not have much experience but the Korean team played in the World League this year. Only two of my players have the experience of playing in the World League. As captain of the Korean national team said they come to play against the Asian champions and had nothing to lose. This made them play with less stress. I consider this loss on time. I would not say I am happy but it was good to learn a lot. If it happens in the next round, we will not have any chance of getting back to the competition. The coach and team of Korea tried to display a mental fight during the match which put our team under pressure.
On the match against Australia on Thursday: “The only action I would take is to change the mood of my players. I know the weaknesses and strength of the Australian team. All balls are delivered to their number six, Captain Thomas Edgar. He is the one who does the most attack in the Australian team. By targeted serves, we are going to stop him. So I think we will be in a better form in front of them.
Captain of Iran, Hamzeh Zarrini: It was a beautiful match and we saw special technics in the Korean team. We made a lot of individual errors in this match but will do certainly better in our next match. Victory in the last games made us think this game was easy too. I believe this loss happened at the right time to make players take it more seriously. I assure you we will be among the top four teams.
